Dear ARSTM Members,
We write to you today to share the news that the ARSTM pre-conference at the Rhetoric Society of America Biannual Meeting in Portland has been cancelled due to the continued spread of COVID-19. Please see the official cancellation message from RSA President, Dr. Kirt Wilson. There, he provides guidance about listing your anticipated presentation on your CV. If we can be of any assistance in navigating that question for you, please do not hesitate to reach out.
If you have already paid your registration for the RSA preconference through our website, please use this form to let us know how you would like to handle refunds. If we do not hear from you, we will assume that you are donating your registration to the organization. If you have any questions, email Molly Kessler, treasurer (kesslerm@umn.edu).
We received the following guidance from thee National Communication Association regarding the ethical considerations of submitting a previously accepted paper to NCA 2020:
Q: If I submitted a paper to another conference, and it was accepted, but the conference was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, can I submit that accepted paper to NCA for consideration?
A: Yes. If you did not present the paper virtually, circulate the paper online through a conference supported forum, or publish the paper elsewhere, you can submit that paper for consideration to the NCA Annual Convention. If a paper is accepted to the NCA Annual Convention that was previously slated for presentation at another convention, it should be listed on a CV as presented at the NCA Annual Convention, rather than the previously accepted convention. Conversely, those who had papers accepted for submission at a cancelled conference or who will be presenting their papers in altered formats can click here for information from APA on how to cite those presentations on a CV.
While we are saddened that we will not be able to gather for our pre-conference and subsequent RSA conference programming, the well-being of our members comes first . We would like to recognize the hard work of pre-conference co-organizers Daniel Card, Molly Kessler, and Emily Winderman.
We wish you the best during this difficult time and encourage you to reach out if there is anything that ARSTM can to do support you
Sincerely,
The ARSTM Leadership Team
