The Association for the Rhetoric of Science, Technology, and Medicine (ARSTM) and NCA’s Environmental Communication Division call for submissions for their first co-sponsored preconference to NCA on November 15th, 2023. In 2023, ARSTM asks preconference participants to look to new collaborations, coalitions, and alliances that advance ARSTM’s goal of providing a forum for researchers and teachers. This year’s preconference aims to bring together scholars from a variety of fields to explore the role of communication in shaping science, technology, medicine, the environment and more. As such, the conference theme is open with the goal of encouraging new vision and collaborations in the future. We welcome submissions from scholars in a variety of fields, including rhetoric, communication, environmental studies, science and technology studies, philosophy of science, and medicine.
We invite submissions that explore, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- The role of scientific and medical rhetoric in shaping public policy related to environmental issues, including environmental and community health
- The use of language and discourse in shaping public perceptions of environmental issues, such as climate change, pollution, energy transition, and conservation
- The ways in which technology is changing the communication landscape of environmental issues
- The relationship between environmental justice and rhetoric in science, technology, and medicine
- The challenges and opportunities presented by intercultural and interdisciplinary communication in science, technology, medical, and environmental issues
- The influence of culture, politics, and history on the rhetoric science, technology, medicine, and environmental communication
- The role of visual and multimedia elements in science, technology, medicine, or environmental communication
- The potential for collaboration between science, technology, and medicine and environmental communication to address pressing environmental issues.
- Descriptions of applied projects related to rhetoric in science, technology, medicine, or environmental communication.
Submission Guidelines: Submissions may be in the form of individual abstracts, panel proposals, or special sessions and should detail in 500 words or fewer the topic, methodology, and proposed arguments. Panel proposals should include three or four presenters and an additional 100-word rationale for the panel that carefully details how each paper contributes to an overall argument. Panels should include speakers from multiple institutions.
